The Editing team is planning another A/B test for the "DiscussionTools" Beta Feature. This is part of mw:Talk pages project/Usability. The test plan and metrics are outlined at mw:Talk pages project/Usability/Analysis.


I am here to ask you all to participate in this test. Half of you would see the new features; the other editors would see no change. You can always change your preferences. The Beta Feature is in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures, and if you have it turned on, there is a separate preference setting in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion, called "הצגת פעילות דיון".


You can see what the changes would look like on your own User_talk: page by going to https://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MyTalk?dtenable=1 (If you've already got the Beta Feature enabled, then you won't see anything new.)

בדיקת A/B מגיעה בקרוב. הפרדה ויזואלית (זברה #9) בין אזורים[עריכת קוד מקור]

שלום לכולם,

בעוד מספר שבועות נבצע בדיקה. חצי ממשתמשי גרסת המחשב המחוברים יראו דפים שמפרידים בצורה ברורה יותר בין אזורי הדף השונים. התוצאה תכיל יותר גבולות ושטחים באפור (ראו תצוגה מקדימה). כעבור שבועיים כולם שוב יראו את הממשק הלבן הנוכחי. אנו ננתח את המידע שנקבל משני סוגי המשתמשים, אלו שחוו שינוי ואלו שלא, ונחליט על הצעדים הבאים ביולי.

תגובות לגבי השטח הלבן

נכון לעכשיו וקטור 2022 משתמש בשטח לבן להפרדת אזורים שונים של הדף בממשק. הוא גם מציג רקע לבן מחוץ לאזורי התוכן. קיבלנו על כך תגובות רבות. ישנן שתי סיבות לדאגה:

  1. הערות לגבי הוספת יותר הפרדה ויזואלית בין אזורים בדף בממשק. למשל, גבולות מסביב לשטח התוכן ומסביב לתפריטי צד. מתנדבים תוהים אם זה ישפר את חוויית הקריאה. בראש ובראשונה באמצעות שני דברים:
    • משיכת יותר מיקוד ותשומת לב לתוכן כשמגיעים לעמוד, במקום ספיגת הממשק כמכלול שלם מלכתחילה, ורק אז מעבר לתוכן.
    • פישוט היכולת להישאר ממוקדים בתוכן במהלך הקריאה, כי שטח התוכן יוגדר בצורה ברורה יותר.
  2. הערות לגבי הוספת רקע אפור מחוץ לשטח התוכן. מתנדבים תוהים האם זה ישחרר את המתח בעיניים, דוגמת סינוויר, שחלק מהאנשים חווים בשטחים לבנים רחבים במסכים גדולים.
    • הרבה מכם דיווחו שניגודיות השטח הלבן גבוהה מדי ולכן הוספת גוון אחר, למשל אפור, תקל על המתח.
    • זה גם יכול להוסיף מיקוד לשטח התוכן ותוכן העניינים.

לגבי הבדיקה עצמה

כדי לוודא את ההנחות הללו קבענו בדיקת משתמשים עם הקוראים. כאן תוכלו לקרוא פרטים על הבדיקה וללמוד על התוצאות.

אנו רוצים גם לוודא שהמתכונת החדשה לא תשפיע לרעה על מדדים חשובים כלשהם של ויקי. זאת הסיבה שמתוכננת בדיקת A/B. אנו נחפש צמצומים קטנים במדדים הבאים: מספר קריאות הדף, כמות ההתנתקויות, כמות העריכות, שימוש בתוכן העניינים, גלילת הדף, ושימוש בכלי הדף. עקב ענייני הפרטיות וההגבלות הטכניות נוכל לבצע את הבדיקה רק עם משתמשים מחוברים לחשבון. אנו נסנן את התוצאות לפי מספר העריכות של המשתמש. לאחר מכן נדמה את המשתמשים הלא מחוברים בעזרת נתוני המשתמשים המחוברים עם אפס עריכות.

הבדיקה תתחיל בשבועיים הקרובים ותמשך בדיוק שבועיים. היא תתקיים בוויקיפדיות הבאות: העברית, האנגלית, הפרסית, הצרפתית, הקוריאנית, הפורטוגלית, הסרבית, התאילנדית, הטורקית והוויאטנמית.

בתום השבועיים כולם שוב יראו את הגרסה הנוכחית הלבנה. לאחר מכן נבדוק האם המתכונת החדשה השפיעה לרעה על המדדים הללו. אם יתברר שלא, נפעיל אותה לכל המשתמשים בכל אתרי ויקי. בכל מקרה זה לא יקרה לפני יולי.

This is a reminder/update – we are planning on starting this test today tomorrow. We will begin with Hebrew Wikipedia, and if everything is correct and there are no technical errors, we will launch the A/B test on the remainder of wikis, as listed above.

is there a way (e.g., via index.php parameter) to enforce the "B" behavior for users in the "A" group and vice versa?
i would be interested in seeing the new appearance if i fall outside the experiment.

Yes, thanks for the question! The URL parameter forcing Zebra is ?VectorZebraDesign=1, and to force the old look, just replace 1 with 0 (without Zebra, with Zebra). I feel I should make a small warning, though – while it's technically possible to use this to, say, create a browser plugin allowing us to only use Zebra or preventing us from seeing Zebra, we discourage from using it and getting used to it because this code and the A/B test itself will only be temporary. Decisions regarding the future of Zebra will be made in July.

Hi, I have an update, due to some problems with the settings of the A/B test, we'll need to disable it today, try to fix the problem, and hopefully, re-enable the test next week.
In the meantime, I'd like to invite you to take a look at the Foundation's draft annual plan for 2023-2024. The technical part is described in the section Infrastructure and, in a more detailed way, in a table outlining objectives and key results. The deadline is this tomorrow, Friday! Apologies for the trouble with the A/B test.

SGrabarczuk: I was lucky enough to fall in the Zebra-enabled list of users, and I have to admit that even though this is a relatively small cosmetic change, it looks a lot better and it's much easier on the eyes. I am usually not too fond of design and layout changes, but this one is really great. I think the Zebra design should be the default for all desktop readers. I'm glad to read that, @Guycn2. It's wonderful that you like the change! It just so happens that you don't need to voice your support for this anywhere else. Of course, you are always welcome to comment on the project talk page. But how this A/B test works is a bit different. This design was built based on the editors' feedback already. Now, we're only checking if metrics such as edit rates don't go down. Unless they do, I think the new look will stay as the new default. But this decision will be made in July. So just in case it is eventually decided not to enable Zebra for everyone, I hope you still retain the ability to opt-in using a user preference. It would be quite difficult to go back to the all-white look...

i also like it a lot. i happen to be in group B (or whatever is the name of the "zebra" group), but i was looking at it even while the experiment halted, using the index.php parameter ( ?VectorZebraDesign=1 ). @IKhitron - you can play with it by adding it to your window.index_php_params (you do use this script iirc).
for anyone else who'd like to try it relatively painlessly, you can do so by installing script 81. in documentation, look for "התאמה אישית" and add to דף הסקריפטים האישי:

Hello, the test will be disabled tomorrow. Everyone will see the white version again. The decision if the tested version would become the default will be made in about three weeks.

Hey, @Guycn2. Yes, there is an update on our project page. We'll also send messages to all the wikis where we have run the A/B test. In short, the tested version was not good enough. It would require lots of time to improve it, and we're not saying that we're abandoning it. However, a better plan for easier improvements is our new project, which we'll also introduce soon.
